Our bones are living things that are continually falling away and rebuilding throughout our lifetime. Old bone breaks away and new bone is re-grown as a way of keep themselves strong and healthy. Everyone suffers bone loss and re-growth no matter what your age or gender. For women, however, bone loss can occur rapidly as they age. Here’s why bone health is so important for women.
Knowledge about total health will help us lead healthy life ahead.
Excessive bone loss, otherwise known as Osteoporosis, sets in as we age. For women who reach menopause, however, the rate of bone loss is four times greater when compared to men. This is because sexual hormones deposit calcium in the bones of the body. When a woman hits menopause, the production of estrogen (her sexual hormone) is decreased drastically. As a result the calcium so essential to good bone health isn’t replaced as rapidly. This in turn causes the bones in women who have reached menopause to become brittle which makes them more prone to breaking.
Other factors that can contribute to rapid bone loss include, but are not limited to, having your ovaries removed or partaking in excessive exercise both of which can reduce the level of estrogen in your body. Osteoporosis can also develop due to hormone disorders or prolonged bed rest associated with serious illness. The bones will soften and weaken over time due to the lack of vitamin D.
An imbalance in your body’s natural acidity level, loss of phosphate, women who smoke and women who have a family history of Osteoporosis can also put you at a higher risk for loosing calcium. Still, there are ways for a woman to prepare for this period in her life that can help her bones to stay strong and healthy.
A diet that contains calcium-rich foods can make a huge difference to maintaining healthy bones. Lots of women don’t care for, or can’t tolerate, whole milk and other dairy products that are loaded with calcium, but the great news is that lactose-free milk and lactose-free dairy produce contain just as much calcium as whole milk; the same holds true for low-fat and fat-free milk. If it’s the taste of milk that turns you off to it, try adding some sort of flavoring to it to disguise the taste.
Calcium supplements are another great way to keep your levels of calcium at good levels, as is eating assorted nuts and legumes. Interestingly, excessive protein and sodium can actually counteract your efforts to consume calcium. This is because protein and sodium can cause your body to excrete calcium rather than consume it. A moderate amount of exercise is also a great way to keep your bones healthy and strong.
Everyone needs to put forth an effort to make and keep their bones healthy and strong. Men do not lose their sexual hormones (Testosterone) as they age, and are therefore at an advantage with regard to bone loss. As previously states, women do suffer from excessive bone loss when their bodies stop producing estrogen, and therefore, need to put forth a greater effort to take care of their bones than men do.
